Recruiting US Government R&D Professionals for Quantitative and Qualitative Research

October 2026

Research among the US government-funded R&D community required access to government R&D decision-makers, technical professionals and potential federal R&D contractors. The assignment combined government R&D respondent recruitment for a quantitative study with follow-up qualitative recruitment.

Business Challenge

The assignment required recruiting niche, senior-level professionals across the US government-funded R&D ecosystem. It also required identifying respondents from the quantitative sample for a subsequent qualitative phase.

The key requirements were to:

  • Reach government R&D decision-makers, technical professionals and potential federal R&D contractors across the United States

  • Support a quantitative study targeting approximately 350 completes

  • Recruit nine respondents from the quantitative sample for in-depth interviews

Our Approach

The quantitative phase combined Phone-to-Web research and CATI research (Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing) for a 20-minute survey.

Recruitment covered the specified professional groups within the government-funded R&D ecosystem. For in-depth interview recruitment in government R&D, we drew from the quantitative sample and recruited qualified respondents for the nine required IDIs.

This connected the two phases through a shared respondent base, with quantitative participation providing the route into qualitative recruitment.

Results

We successfully delivered the quantitative study and recruited all nine required qualitative IDI respondents.

The engagement demonstrated:

  • Successful recruitment of niche, senior-level R&D professionals within the US government-funded ecosystem

  • Delivery of the quantitative phase using Phone-to-Web and CATI

  • Successful recruitment of qualified quantitative respondents into the follow-up qualitative phase

Impact for the Client

The client’s requirement went beyond reaching a specialist professional audience; it also required recruiting participants from that audience for further discussion.

The engagement fulfilled both requirements, delivering the quantitative study and securing the full nine-person qualitative recruitment target from its respondent base. This connected government R&D quantitative research with recruitment for the required qualitative interviews.
